Talent Analysis
Orlov is a talented, smooth skating offensive defenseman who prefers to press the attack and create scoring opportunities at all times. His freelancing at times creates openings for the opposition, but Orlov is a constant threat. He is a decent sized player with a strong core but does not play an overly physical game. His strong suit is his creativity and high skill level which allows him to execute the complex plays he conceives. His shooting is accurate if not powerful and he is also adept at finding teammates with quick passes.
Future
Orlov will compete for a roster spot in training camp, but will likely start the year with Hershey (AHL). His offensive game is above-average, but he still needs to develop the defensive aspects of his game before he’s ready for the NHL. He is on the short list of call-ups if injury problems arise in Washington and will likely see at least a cup of coffee in the 2011-12 season. Down the road, he’ll need to round out his all-around game but could be a top-four blueliner who can contribute on the power play within a few years.
